What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars located at the back of the mouth. There are generally four total wisdom teeth, however, this isn’t the case for everyone. Some people have none, some people have less, and some people have more than four. It simply depends on the person.
Why Would Someone Need Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth generally start appearing during the late teens or early adult years. As they pop through the gums, sensitivity and some discomfort may appear. Wisdom teeth don’t really serve a particular purpose, so it’s absolutely okay to have them removed. If they’ve pushed through and your teeth aren’t shifting, you may opt to keep them. Wisdom teeth removal is still common even if there isn’t a current problem because they can be hard to clean being way back in your mouth. Unclean wisdom teeth can lead to decay and cavities ultimately resulting in the total removal of the teeth.
When there isn’t enough space in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to come through naturally, they become impacted below the gum surface. This could cause several problems such as:
- Teeth shifting
- Pain
- Gum infection
- Headaches or jawaches
- And other problems
If you’re contemplating wisdom teeth removal, we suggest coming in for a routine cleaning and check up. When we get a clean canvas along with x-rays, we’re able to get a better picture of how your mouth and teeth are holding up. Then we can make the best decision possible for the overall health of your mouth!
